High school hit by coronavirus fears releases results of teacher's hospital test

A high school that was hit by coronavirus fears when a teacher became ill after a trip to Italy has released the results of a hospital test.

The staff member at Calderstones School was sent home earlier this week when he developed flu-like symptoms upon returning from holiday.

It is believed that on Tuesday morning, the teacher approached the school's headteacher to explain that he had recently visited northern Italy and was feeling unwell.

He was immediately sent home and told to self-isolate until an official test could be carried out.

The school confirmed that the staff member was in quarantine on Wednesday to reassure parents and children that they were not at risk.

On Friday afternoon, an official letter from the school confirmed that the teacher had been tested for the virus and was given the "all-clear".

Headteacher Mr Ratcliffe sent a letter to parents to thank them for their support over the last few days.

He said: "Many thanks to those of you who have been so incredibly supportive over the last couple of days and to your children who have generally been excellent in their response to matters in school this week.

"I can confirm that the member of staff who was sent home from work this week was tested for the coronavirus and has been given the all-clear by the Royal Liverpool Hospital today.

"As you can imagine, the member of staff is relieved, as are we. I’m sure you are too."

He also explained in the letter that the teacher will still stay at home until all his symptoms had cleared.

The letter said: "The member of staff has nonetheless been advised to stay at home for the time being until all of the cold-like symptoms have cleared up.

"I am certain and hopeful that when the member of staff returns to school, students will be respectful and supportive.

"Given the current climate, we will nonetheless continue with the enhanced cleaning operations that we have undertaken this week and we will continue to monitor any other concerns that might be raised."
