Politicians including ex-Prime Minister David Cameron attended George Osborne’s wedding to his long-term partner, as the mystery of the 'upsetting' email sent to guests continues.
The 52-year-old Ex-Chancellor of the Exchequer married his former Treasury adviser Thea Rogers in a ceremony in Bruton, Somerset, earlier today. Among the guests for the ceremony were David Cameron and his wife Samantha, former chancellor and Levelling-Up Secretary Michael Gove, Lord Hague and his wife Ffion and, former health secretary Matt Hancock.
Also present were a number of well-known journalists.
On the eve of the festivities, every guest is said to have been sent a mysterious email which “really upset” the couple.
Mr Osborne has called in police to investigate a “distressing campaign of harassment”. He is said to know the identity of the author of the email circulated to guests, friends, and family as well as to prominent journalists.
He has begun civil proceedings against the person and has now asked the police to investigate.
Mr Osborne was not seen arriving at the church today but his bride walked through the churchyard to claps from well-wishers.
She walked into the church accompanied by two large umbrellas due to the light rain.
The service, which lasted nearly an hour, included music from Beethoven's Ode To Joy and Hubert Parry's Jerusalem.
After the smiling couple emerged from the church as the bells rang, a smartly dressed woman showered them with orange confetti from a Union flag paper bag.
Mr Osborne looked behind him as she approached the couple before throwing the confetti over the groom.
The grey-haired woman, in a floral dress and pale-coloured jacket, emptied the bag of confetti near the couple before she left after being spoken to by two men.
The couple looked puzzled but did not appear to speak to the woman, who fled quickly when approached by journalists.
Around 200 people attended the wedding and they lined the path to throw confetti at the newly married couple and clap and cheer. Other guests included ex-governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney, and Labour's Ed Balls with his wife Yvette Cooper, the shadow home secretary.
After quitting the House of Commons, Mr Osborne became editor of the Evening Standard newspaper. His new bride joined the Treasury in 2012 from the BBC where she was a producer for Nick Robinson.
The town of Bruton, where they own a five-bedroom Grade II-listed house they bought for £1.6 million in 2020, has been dubbed "the Notting Hill of the West" due to the number of celebrities living there.
The couple announced their engagement in April 2021, with Mr Osborne saying at the time: "I have probably never been happier in my life."
In July 2021, they welcomed their first child together, a son named Beau. Their second son, Arthur, was born on December 30, 2022.
He was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2010 to 2016 under Tory PM David Cameron then went on to be editor of the Evening Standard from 2017 to 2020. He is now chairman of the British Museum and is set to launch a new podcast in the autumn with former Labour opponent Ed Balls.
