Zakaria al-Zubaidi, a prominent Palestinian figure, was among the group of detainees released by Israel on Thursday. Al-Zubaidi, a key player in the Palestinian uprising of 2000, also known as the Second Intifada, was seen on a bus transporting the released prisoners from Israel’s Ofer prison in the occupied West Bank.
Al-Zubaidi held the position of commander of the Jenin branch of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, the militant arm of the Palestinian political party Fatah. His involvement in the uprising made him a long-standing target on Israel’s list of most wanted individuals, leading to his arrest in 2019.
In a daring escape in 2021, Al-Zubaidi managed to break out of Gilboa prison, located between the Sea of Galilee in Israel and the West Bank town of Jenin, along with five other Palestinian prisoners. However, his freedom was short-lived as he was recaptured a few days later.
