High-end Chinatown sneaker store announces 'sad' closure

A store in Chinatown renown for selling rare and limited edition sneakers has announced it is shutting up shop.

Bosses at Sneaker 63, situated next door to the Wasabi sushi bar on Faulkner Street, took to social media this week to announce the store will close its doors on Saturday (December 31).

Dubbed Manchester’s ‘first consignment store’, Sneaker 63 was known for selling high-end items on behalf of other sellers, which were all graded and checked for authenticity. Items for sale, such as the Jordan 3 Retro Tinker Oregon Ducks PE, can go for as much as £15,000.

Since opening in 2019, Sneaker 63 sold the likes of Yeezy's and Nike Air Force 1 shoes, alongside watches, hats and trading cards. The store also sold a number of exclusive items before they hit the wider market.

Posting on the @sneaker63official Instagram page, store owner Jack Chen said it was with a ‘deep sadness’ that the shop would close this weekend.

Chen wrote: “It is with a deep sadness that Sneaker 63 will close its physical store on 31st December due to a partnership issue within Sneaker 63.

“I appreciate you all and the support from the start till now it’s been amazing to see you all and also watch through the years grow and your collections and stories that you’ve told about how you’ve copped that pair you always wanted.

“I’m gonna miss that a lot and everyone .. so I hope to see y’all soon before close …. – Jack.”

It's not yet clear if the store's website, which sells items worldwide, will continue to operate.

In 2020, Chen spoke with the Manchester Evening News about how the pandemic was having an impact on Chinatown’s many businesses. At the time, he expressed hope that the area would be able to ‘pull through’ and learn lessons from the lockdown.
