Hidden NCT rule that lets drivers get test free of charge

Many drivers due for an NCT are left waiting for months as appointment slots tend to fill up rapidly.

Every vehicle has to undergo a car safety test to ensure it is roadworthy and safe. However, it can be a struggle to get a test date in the first place.

But there's one rule that allows drivers who have been waiting for too long to get their vehicles inspected free of charge. According to the NCT standards of customer service, the programme "aims to ensure that the average lead time for an appointment at an individual NCT centre is less than or equal to 15 days".

In cases where a driver is left waiting for an appointment for over 28 days, they can get their NCT free of charge. However, there are a few exceptions to this rule.

Those waiting for an NCT for over four weeks can't get the test free of charge if:

  • the test is overdue by more than 7 days at the time of contacting us;
  • an appointment was offered 7 days or more prior to the test due date;
  • you have made specific requests regarding suitable days, times or dates;
  • you have declined or rearranged two or more appointments;
  • you have failed to attend an appointment; or
  • you have previously accepted or requested an appointment outside of the 28-day period.

You can find out more on the NCT website.
