Hidden gem stand in St John's serving 'huge slabs' of 'fresh' cake

I don't usually visit Aldi in the city centre but, recently when I was passing by, I discovered a hidden gem cake stand that some of you may not know about.

'The Cake Box' is located inside St John's Shopping Centre right next to Aldi, and sells an array of different cakes for a cheeky sweet treat. The company started in 2008 and now has over 195 stores according to its website.

Eggfree Cake Box follows a strict lacto-vegetarian diet and, as someone that eats eggs and dairy on a daily basis, I honestly couldn't tell the difference with these cakes. The company is said to 'pride themselves on using the finest quality ingredients' and offer huge slabs of cake, as well as whole cakes for special occasions.

The Cake Box has an online website where you can use a click and collect service to get your cake fix, but I was lucky enough to see the cakes in the flesh. There were so many different types to choose from, including different chocolate bar toppings to more classic looking cakes.

From slices to full size cakes for a special occasion, each of the cakes were aesthetically very pleasing. The fresh cream was neatly piped onto every slice with delicate icing and moreish chocolate.

Being a big Kinder Bueno lover, I decided to go for a slice of its Kinder cake, which was neatly boxed up along with an Oreo one too. I wasn't sure what to expect since I'd never been here before but I was left feeling pretty impressed.

The cakes

Aesthetically, the cakes were amazing, and looked so beautiful I almost didn't want to take a bite (but of course, I did). There was a lot of fresh cream, so the cakes were on the messy side, but that didn't bother me in the slightest

I would’ve liked the cakes to taste more like the actual chocolate bar topping but instead they had more of a vague chocolate flavour. They still tasted good, but I was left craving more of that Kinder Bueno flavour.

I was half expecting the cakes to be sickly and stodgy, but I was amazed at how light and fluffy they were. My big slab of cake was actually quite airy, and the fresh cream really topped it all off.

In terms of price, I ended up paying around £7.10 for both slices, which does sound pretty steep - until you see the size of the slices. I’m not talking about a teeny tiny slither of cake here, I’m talking about a huge chocolatey creamy piece of goodness.

The verdict

What really made The Cake Box stand out to me was the sheer choice on offer. The stand was literally filled with brightly-coloured, beautifully-detailed cakes, that you could take home with you there and then.

I definitely want to visit here again to try out all of the other incredible flavours available because there’s nothing better than a nice piece of cake as a treat.
