Hibs' Ryan Porteous handed unlikely ally as Willie Miller backs defender after Jim Goodwin rant

Aberdeen great Willie Miller believes Dons manager Jim Goodwin should have showed restraint with his comments about Hibs' Ryan Porteous.

The Irishman has been charged by the Scottish FA and asked to explain his comments after claiming Hibs' central defender was a 'cheat.' He and Aberdeen defender Liam Scales were involved in a penalty box tussle during a match between the clubs earlier this month, Porteous going down in the box and Aberdeen going down to 10 men as their centre-back was sent off.

Miller says the current Aberdeen boss was in the wrong to be as heavy-handed as he was with his words and that Scales needs to take some responsibility. He told Sportsound: "I don't think it's right that any manager should be calling a player from another club a conman. You just leave yourself open for anarchy as any manager who thinks they can get away with that... Jim Goodwin has decided to say that.

"He has decided and that is fine. I've got an opinion and I respect what he is trying to do, but he needs to respect my opinion. That is that I don't think any manager should be calling an opposition player a conman.

"I don't see any way he can get himself out of it. Jim's spoken to his central defenders to tell them Ryan Porteous goes down in the box - so why was Liam Scales grabbing him and trying to block him?

"He wasn't looking at the ball, he's looking at Porteous. Ok, he goes down and Jim can have his say about it, but I stand a yard away from him if I'm Scales. I know if I get close to him he's going down, as my manager has just told me that!"
