Hibs receive 'one of highest sales figures ever' for Josh Doig as Hellas Verona deal details emerge

Josh Doig has completed his move to Hellas Verona from Hibs in a deal described by the club as 'one of the highest sales figures ever received'.

The transfer from Easter Road to Italy's Serie A also includes add-ons and a large sell-on agreement for any future transfer from his new club. Chief Executive Ben Kensell has first of all thanked the 20-year-old for his time at the club and has revealed the 'perfect outcome' from the club and Josh in the transfer talks with the money from the transfer to be reinvested in the first-team.

Lee Johnson has arrived this summer and already been heavily backed by his new club with a number of key summer additions including David Marshall, Aiden McGeady and Jair Tavares. More could yet arrive before the close of the window now that the Hibees have a financial windfall behind them following the full-back's departure. Kensell commented: “I’d like to begin by thanking Josh for his time at Hibernian FC; he’s a great young man with a big future ahead of him.

“Understandably, there’s been a lot of interest and speculation around him for a prolonged period of time, but we’ve always been in a strong, controlled position after he extended his contract with us back in November.

“We had good but drawn-out conversations with Verona, and this led to the perfect outcome for us and for Josh.

“We have received what is a really significant fee for this football club, money that will be reinvested into the First Team squad.

“This is a great example of what we want Hibs to be; a club that gives young, talented players a platform to shine before they generate substantial fees to re-invest into the Club and the playing squad. This is how we will grow as a football club.”

Hibs boss Lee Johnson added: “This deal highlights the great work done in the Academy and shows the pathway for our young players.

“The terms of this deal made complete sense for us. Josh is an excellent talent and I have no doubt he will go on to have a successful future.”

A club statement read : "We can confirm that Josh Doig has left Hibernian FC to join Serie A side Hellas Verona for a significant seven-figure deal.

"The full terms of the 20-year-old’s departure will remain undisclosed, however, the fee received will be one of the highest sales figures the club has ever received, with the deal also including add-ons and a large sell-on agreement.

"Doig joined the Hibs Academy in the summer of 2019 and after a short loan spell with Queen’s Park found himself in the First Team squad.

"The youngster endured a magnificent breakthrough campaign, making 35 appearances, and was named the Scottish Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year in 2021.

"He helped the club reach two cup finals, and a first top-three finish in 16 years, going on to make 86 appearances as a Hibee, scoring one goal."
