Hibs move to SWPL summit after victory over Rangers

Grant Scott's Hibs moved to the top of the SWPL yesterday afternoon following a 2-0 win over Rangers - who had gone into the game as league leaders - at Meadowbank.

Jo Potter was irked at being knocked off the summit after Rangers took prime place midweek and with just five remaining league matches to play this term has told her side there can be no room for a repeat.

“We were miles off it and we know that it is nowhere near good enough if we want to challenge for titles and challenge for the league,” said a frustrated Potter.

“We can’t produce performances like that. We have got five games left and we have got to bring our best for every moment of those games.”

Kathleen McGovern had opened the scoring after just nine minutes when she headed Eilidh Adams' cross beyond the reach of Jenna Fife.

Rangers had an early goal from Kirsty Howat's goal disallowed before Hibs had taken the lead.

Hibs, though, pressed home their advantage with a second ten minutes before the interval.

Stacey Papadopoulos drilled a low shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner to double their lead with Potter questioning the mentality of her side.

“We had a goal after two minutes and I cannot see why it wasn’t allowed,” said Potter.

“Moments like that can swing games.

“I am not saying we would have gone on to win, but I couldn’t see anything wrong with it.

“But we didn’t deserve anything from that game.

“If you look at Hibs, they were better than us all over the park. They physically out-battled us which is really disappointing.

“I am not saying they played better football than us but they did what they did well and it was effective.

“On Wednesday we recovered from a breakaway early goal but we never looked like recovering.

“It is very disappointing but we didn’t deserve a thing.

“The conversation we have with the players now is about the difference in mentality. We lost an early goal away to Glasgow City but we were able to recover, away from home, whereas we didn’t do that. That difference in mentality is shown across the two games.”

Leanne Ross was equally aggrieved as Glasgow City were held to a goalless draw at the Oriam against Eva Olid's Hearts.

And she has said that tiredness in what has been a three-game week on the back of an internatioanl break is no excuse for a lethargic start to the game

It leaves them three points behind Hibs.

“I am really frustrated with our first-half performance,” said Ross.

“We looked sluggish and gave Hearts the opportunity to go and play. It took us 45 minutes to get ourselves into the game.

“We looked more energised in the second-half but we lacked that quality in the final third.

“I understand the players are tired. It has been a difficult week but there is no excuse to take 45 minutes to get into a game.”

Celtic moved into fourth spot after a 1-0 win over Motherwell with Maria McAneny scoring the only goal of the game.

Elena Sadiku’s side are eight points behind the Hibees.

At the other end of the table, Queen’s Park’s relegation was confirmed following their 5-2 defeat to Aberdeen.

Thistle are currently best of the rest after their 1-0 win over Spartans while Montrose beat Dundee United 1-0.
