Hibs kid admits dad Garry O'Connor will give him pelters for not scoring more on Airdrie debut

Josh O'Connor scored his first goal for Airdrie in front of proud dad Garry - but he admits the former Hibs and Scotland striker will be giving him an earful for not bagging a hat-trick on his debut.

The 19-year-old netted in yesterday's 4-0 win over Motherwell U18s in the NL Cup pre-season tournament to get an early settler during his loan move from Easter Road, where his famous father has legendary status.

But the striker, who got on the end of Calum Gallagher's cross to put the Diamonds 2-0 up in the tie, admits he could have had more goals.

And he's sure his dad won't miss the chance to remind him.

Josh said: "He was here today. He will probably be moaning at me, saying I should have scored this, I should have scored that, but that's the type of guy he is.

"I thought I was going to miss it at first but I tapped it in, thank God.

"I probably should have had a couple more but it's happy days scoring one.

"It's a confidence builder for me. I've never played with the boys here so to score a goal and get a 4-0 win is brilliant.

" I need a bit of ruthlessness, hitting the back of the net more than I do. That's the stuff I've got to work on.

"But he is the perfect mentor to have. He's had the best highs and the lowest lows as well.

"He's said just to build myself up and go and play football.

"He will give me the best advice that he can and he's the best guy who can give me advice, along with the gaffer who has had a good career.

"I want to work to be the best player I can be.

"At Hibs, I never got much of a sniff. I maybe got one or two appearances there, so I've come here to build up a statute of appearances, just keep going as a player and try to progress."

O'Connor signed up at the newly-promoted Championship side towards the end of last season alongside fellow Hibee kid Murray Aiken, having impressed McCabe in UEFA Youth League matches for the Edinburgh side.

And O'Connor has been equally impressed by what the Diamonds can offer him.

He said: "The attraction in coming here is the football Airdrie play. The gaffer spoke to me last season and I joined just before we got into the play-off final.

"I came to a couple of games after that and the football they play, especially with the players they have, is great quality.

"We are looking to keep the ball, attack teams, not sit back. We are looking to score goals and pass teams off the park.

"It's just about getting minutes in, getting the principles in, keeping the ball and getting ready for the season. It's going to be a big one for me.

"I love getting on the ball, taking players on - that's what I do. I love to score goals and excite the fans. That's what I look to do every time I get the ball.

"If I get games, hopefully the fans will see me get goals, attacking defenders and link-up play."

Airdrie are back in action this afternoon when they face Albion Rovers in the NL Cup final, kick-off 4pm.
