McGeady is set to leave Sunderland following their promotion to the English Championship.
Johnson previously described the 36-year-old as 'top drawer' during his time with the Black Cats and he could now offer him a return north of the border.
McGeady has confirmed his intention to play on and he would offer Hibs a wealth of experience heading into the new campaign.
He said: “Will I still be at Sunderland? I honestly don’t know. I still want to play, I just don’t know where it will be.
“I doubt it will be at Sunderland. I have enjoyed my time here. If it’s come to an end, so be it.”
Hibs face competition to land McGeady with former midfielder and Celtic hero Scott Brown reportedly keeping tabs on him for Fleetwood Town.
Johnson has already been busy in the market adding two players on pre-contracts.
Scotland international David Marshall is set to arrive on a two-year deal while Nohan Keeneh has put pen to paper on a three-year contract from Leeds.
