Hibs academy chief Steve Kean responds to management return query as he admits 'you never know' despite Leith happiness

Hibs academy director Steve Kean insists he is happy at Easter Road - but has not ruled a return to frontline football management one day.

The Englishman was appointed to the role at the Premiership club last year in his first since his 2021 departure from Australian A-League side Melbourne Victory, where he was assistant manager and subsequently caretaker boss.

His last permanent management job ended in 2017 at Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota Football Club and he made his return to football three years ago as Greek side OFI Crete's technical director.

Kean managed Blackburn Rovers for a two-year spell that ended in 2012 after spells as number two at Real Sociedad, Fulham and Coventry City. It was reported earlier this summer that he was in the running for the vacant job at Championship side Dundee but that eventually went to former Salford City gaffer Gary Bowyer.

While happy in his current role in developing the next generation of Hibs academy players that they hope will one day turn out at Easter Road, Kean says that he won't close the door on management.

His big motivation comes from the support the hierarchy in Leith have provided in the project he heads up.

Speaking to BBC Sportsound, Kean said: "The thing is, when you are running an academy, you are running a whole other part of a football club. You have a big staff.

"We have 131 players in our academy. I have a big job and the reason I came here was the passion Ben Kensell (chief executive) Ian Gordon (head of recruitment) and Ron Gordon (executive chairman) showed to this department.

"Otherwise, I wouldn't have come here. So I am very happy. But you never know if something could happen in the future.

"But I am very content and this is a big thing I am building here with the backing of the club. So I am very happy where I am."
