Hertz Is Selling Off Its Rare Shelby Mach-E Rentals

Mustang enthusiasts and collectors are generally enamored with Shelby cars, especially the limited-edition black and gold GT-H versions used by Hertz. It's the only ex-rental car people pay over MSRP to get. But we're not sure that enthusiasm applies to the handful of Shelby Mach-E GTs in the rental fleet.

Hertz is selling the Shelby-branded EVs less than a year after they went live. Shelby Mach-E GTs started showing up for sale back in October 2024, just a few months after Hertz announced they were renting them. Either the word hasn't spread or interest isn't that strong, because we count 67 currently available through Hertz's website. Mind you, there were originally 100 built.

Pricing might have something to do with that. Every single Shelby Mach-E is listed at $59,995. That's nearly double what Hertz is asking for standard Mach-E GTs from its fleet, which have the same 480-horsepower output. The Shelby Mach-E GT-H gets a body kit, lower ride height, fake V-8 exhaust sounds, and Shelby branding out the wazoo.

All the cars we found for sale had roughly 8,000 to 10,000 miles on the odometer, so it's not like they just sat around. One car in Las Vegas had just 4,000 miles, while another in Texas was close to 15,000. Each has the same black exterior with gold trim, and all are priced the same, regardless of the mileage. That's actually down from $65,000 in November, according to Carscoops, so perhaps Hertz is motivated to get rid of these high-performance EVs.

It seems Hertz is ready to move on from EV rentals in general. A year ago the company decided to downsize its Tesla Model 3 fleet, but unlike the Shelbys, those were priced to sell. Numerous examples were available for around $20,000, albeit with considerably more miles than what these Shelbys have racked up. As it stands right now, there are just 12 Model 3s left for sale through Hertz.
