Heron Foods opens in Netherfield which people say they've been 'waiting for'

Shoppers in Netherfield say they've 'been waiting' for a discount shop like Heron Foods to open in the town. The new shop in Victoria Road opened for the first time on Thursday (April 27).

And residents have welcomed the shop that's known for its cheaper prices. Shirley Wilson, who is 77 years old and has lived in Netherfield for 14 years, said: “In some shops, you’re paying twice as much compared to here. I've been waiting for a shop like this to open in Netherfield.”

Leaving the shop with two full bags, one of the products Shirley bought was a sponge cake. She added: “Next, we need more clothes shops but I’m happy.” More happy customers included Angela and John Bowers from Netherfield.

John said: “Where else can you get a trolley full for £20?” While Angela added: “I’m quite happy, usually I have to go to the Heron in Bilborough when I visit my mum but this is more convenient. I’ve been saying for years ‘we could do with a Heron'.’”

Builder Damien Wheeler, 35, said: “I’m happy; I’ll probably pop back later too, I know there’s the retail park and the Netherfield high street but who doesn’t like Heron?"

The chain, which is owned by B&M and has more than 300 stores across the UK, said all of its 23 full-time and part-time positions had already been filled at the new shop.

The first 200 customers who spent £10 or more were offered a goodie bag worth more than £10, with the first 250 receiving a scratch card for store prizes.

Heron Foods area manager Stacey Marks said: “What we certainly can offer is good quality products for cheaper than Co-op and Nisa who are our competitors. How our business works is to get to the best deals with us, you need to shop with us regularly.

"When products are gone, they’re gone. We have yogurts that are two for £1 at the moment but that might not be the case tomorrow. We have products coming in every day too.”

The store opened next door to a gym that's replaced a car showroom. Other recent Heron stores include the one in Blenheim Drive, Chilwell, which opened last year.
