Hero Glasgow man speaks of 'surreal' moment he caught baby thrown to safety

A heroic Glasgow passer-by has spoken of the moment he caught a baby which was thrown to safety during a flat block blaze in Ibrox yesterday, January 6.

Ryan McGeachie was making his back home after going to the shops when he heard the screams of a woman coming from Harley Street.

The 30-year-old burst into action when he realised someone was in real danger.

He told Glasgow Live: "I was walking back from the Co-Op which is just round the corner from me.

"There was a woman screaming out the window. I didn't understand what was happening at first.

"She grabbed a child and put her out the window and then started shouting fire. That's when I just sprinted to the window. I was there to catch the child."

The Fishmonger didn't panic and relied purely on instinct during the life saving moment.

He said: "I wasn't thinking anything apart from get the child, so I grabbed the child.

"It was very spur of the moment. I was relieved when I caught her. I put her down and made sure she was ok.

"I just made sure the baby was ok. Then an older woman came over and put her jacket around her."

Now the man, who lived round the corner from the incident, has been dubbed a hero by many.

However, he doesn't believe what he did was special. In fact he is adamant that any other member of the public in the area would have done the same thing.

The hero said: "I'm just happy they are ok.

"It's just what you have to do. I reckon anybody would do that."

Following the incident a woman was rushed to hospital.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received a report of a fire at a property on Harley Street, Glasgow, around 4.15pm on Friday, 6 January, 2023.

“Emergency services attended and one woman has been taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment."
