A GAA star has become a hero after rescuing a mum and her 11-month-old baby from their burning house.

She was suddenly woken up by her neighbour, Sligo GAA star Gerry McGowan, who was shouting at her through the window.

The former footballer, who won a Connacht medal with Sligo in 2007 and played club for many years with the highly successful Tourlestrane, lives right next to Rachel and noticed fire coming out from her property.
Brave Gerry did not think twice as he rushed to Rachel's house with a fire extinguisher while yelling at her to get out and managed to safely evacuate her and her young infant from the home. It is understood the fire started from hot ashes left out in the back of the house according to The Sligo Champion.
