Hero catches child thrown from window during flat fire in Glasgow

A Glasgow hero has spoken of the surreal moment he caught a child thrown from a window during a flat fire.

Ryan McGeachie, 30, was making his was home when he heard the screams of a woman coming from a home on Harley Street in Ibrox at around 4.15pm on Friday. The fishmonger says the woman was shouting 'fire' and dangling a child out of the window before he sprinted over to help.

Ryan didn't panic and relied purely on instinct before catching the little girl and taking her to safety. Speaking to Glasgow Live, he explained: "I was walking back from the Co-Op which is just round the corner from me.

"There was a woman screaming out the window. I didn't understand what was happening at first.

"She grabbed a child and put her out the window and then started shouting fire. That's when I just sprinted to the window. I was there to catch the child.

"I wasn't thinking anything apart from get the child, so I grabbed her. It was very spur of the moment. I was relieved when I caught her. I put her down and made sure she was okay."

As soon as Ryan caught the youngster a few other passers-by ran from behind him to try and help the woman in the flat.

The Glasgow man checked to make sure the little girl was okay before an older lady came over and wrapped a jacket around the tot.

Ryan, who lives around the corner from where the incident happened, has now been hailed as a hero.

He added: "I'm just happy they are okay. It's just what you have to do. I reckon anybody would do that."

Following the incident a 44-year old woman was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment. Her condition is currently unknown.

A man and a woman were also treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Police say their enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a fire at a property on Harley Street, Glasgow, around 4.15pm on Friday, January 6. A 44-year-old woman was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital for treatment and a man and a woman were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

“A number of residents were evacuated as a result of the fire. Enquiries into the cause of the fire are ongoing.”
