A police station has been closed in Herefordshire after a hand grenade was handed in by a member of the public.
A bomb squad has been sent to Hereford Police Station to assess the device and “ensure it is disposed of safely”, West Mercia Police said on Tuesday morning.
The station remains closed “as a precaution” while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responds. Bath Street is also closed, according to local reports.
The team is a British Army specialist team that is responsible for the detection, identification, recovery and final disposal of unexploded explosive ordnances.
“A cordon has been put in place around the station and is likely to remain in place for some time,” West Mercia Police wrote on Twitter.
“We would like to reassure the public that there is not believed to be any risk to the wider area or the community.”
A hand grenade is typically a small bomb consisting of explosive material in a metal or plastic container that can be thrown easily.
