There were a bunch of really intriguing possible matchups for the 2022 season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. There were the Cowboys, Raiders, Bills, Broncos, 49ers and Cardinals, all of which would’ve made for an exciting kickoff game against the defending champs.
The NFL ultimately went with the best possible matchup, pitting the Rams against the Bills on Sept. 8. The Broncos were also in the running to face the Rams after they acquired Russell Wilson this offseason, but the NFL wanted to schedule Wilson’s return to Seattle as early as possible.
So, Broncos-Seahawks will also be in Week 1 on Monday Night Football. That way, both teams are still 0-0 and the game doesn’t lose its flare if the Seahawks wind up being one of the worst teams in football – which is very possible.
Broncos we’re in play to face Rams in opener, but NFL ultimately thought it best to play Russell Wilson’s return to Seattle ASAP. If Seahawks were to take a big step back, that matchup would lose juice by the week.

As fun as Rams-Broncos would’ve been, a Week 1 matchup with the Bills is even more exciting. It’s the defending champions against the team with the best Super Bowl odds heading into the 2022 season. And after leaving the Rams in free agency, Von Miller will get to face his former team right away.
It doesn’t get much better than that.
