You’ll notice a distinctive difference in how the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers approach their pregame entrances to this year’s Super Bowl. Where the Chiefs will probably just run out of the tunnel in Las Vegas, excited as a team, with no additional frills, the 49ers will likely walk out as a staffer holds a boombox playing hype music.
You might be wondering now (and then): Why does San Francisco do this? Let me explain because it’s been a thing for a little while now.
The 49ers started walking out with a boombox during the 2017 season when former chief of staff Nick Kray decided there wasn’t enough energy in their tunnel. To compensate, Kray brought out a giant Bluetooth boombox to pump some tunes. The players liked this move so much that Kray got customized stereos from Bumpboxx and, from there on in, started a tradition.
Kray is now with the Houston Texans in the same role, but the 49ers continue pumping out good vibes to themselves before games to this day.
