The 1975 frontman Matty Healy has gotten into an online tussle with fellow artist Azealia Banks after he attempted to defend hyper-pop princess Charli xcx. Here’s the rundown on this beef!
If you know anything about Azealia Banks, it’s that she’s probably got the longest hate list in history. Hilariously, the country of Australia is on that list and unfortunately, we’re still on there following her 2022 tour Down Under.
However, this week, it appears that the “Girls” singer has landed himself in hot water with the singer after he tried to defend Charli from Azealia, who came for the Brat singer and her looks.
What did Azealia Banks say about Charli xcx?
Taking to X on Tuesday, the “212” artist penned a scathing post about Charli’s appearance, stating that she “used to be so pretty”, alongside a snippet of her 2014 “Break The Rules” music video.
Matty Healy defends Charli xcx
In a quote retweet, Matty attempted to defend his bestie by calling out Azealia for her brutal words and telling her to “just rap, bro”.
“Azealia you seem to have a blind spot when it comes to your ‘reads’. All the women you attack seem to be culturally relevant, attractive, divisive and NICE people,” he wrote.
“I think this makes you jealous cos you’re so talented but everything else about you is a failure.”
Azealia Banks & Matty Heaky kick off online
Unbeknownst to Matty, but known to those who wallow in the world of online feuds, you should never, ever fuck with Azealia Banks on X.
Soon after the “Robbers” singer defended Charli, Azealia came through with the a bunch of online jabs. In her lengthy response to The 1975 singer, Azealia clapped back by saying he “can’t read” nor “understand colloquial speak”.
After providing a deeper analysis of her original statement regarding Charli xcx, she went on to add that he needed to be “reminded to stay out of black women’s business”.
“I know I’m interesting iconic and 212 is still better than anything you little white kids can produce in your life, and it probably makes you jealous to this day. But there are plenty of other ways to get the attention you lot crave from me so badly….. by making something good,” she wrote.
Azealia then went on an X rampage, throwing a variety of insults, and allegations not only at Matty but also at The 1975 and his fiancée Gabbriette who is a close friend of Charli xcx.
In her final jab at The 1975 singer, Azealia wrote out an extensive analysis of Matty’s dental hygiene, from the way it looks to what she reckons he needs to do to fix them.
As Azealia continued her brutal roast of Matty Healy, the “Love Me” singer addressed the feud on his own X page and even made a cheeky joke referencing one of Charli’s iconic Brat tracks.
“No but we should actually sort this out on the remix @azealiaslacewig,” he wrote.
In his final tweet on the matter, Matty wrote: “I’m just having fun with my friends on the computer.”
As of writing, things seemed to have simmered down between the singers. However, Azealia shared another post explaining why she came for Matty’s throat after his first tweet.
“I’m actually a better singer than Matty. I did take offence to ‘Just rap bro’ because 1. I’m not a bro 2. I’m a singer first. 3. We’re not about to satisfy any of these bitches egos because I sing better than all them girls, so I might have to shit on him and all of them just for art’s sake,” she wrote.
Why did Matty come to Charli xcx’s defence?
To give you a brief herstory on Matty and Charli’s friendship, the Crash singer is engaged to The 1975 drummer George Daniel, so naturally, their paths would cross.
In early 2024, Charli also opened up about her relationship with Matty, telling Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe that she has “endless amounts of respect for him as a songwriter and him as a person”.
Also, let’s not forget her beautiful friendship with Gabbriette, who Matty proposed to in June of this year.
At this point, it should be in the internet’s Ten Commandments to never reply to Azealia Banks if you’re not ready to deal with her harsh criticisms and lengthy posts.
