Here's Why Captain Marvel Just Punched An Old Lady In The Movie's First Trailer

Captain Marvel’s first trailer features some surprising violence.

Captain Marvel’s first trailer landed this morning, and now I’m more intrigued than ever for the upcoming MCU blockbuster.

Set in the 1990s—we know this because Captain Marvel crash lands directly into a Blockbuster Video in the trailer’s opening moments—Captain Marvel tells the story of Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, and her return to Earth.

The trailer reveals that Danvers doesn’t remember her past on her home planet and leaves us with plenty of mysteries to unravel. I’ve seen complaints that the trailer is too generic to be truly great, but I enjoyed seeing a young Nick Fury discovering his first real superhero. I like that we’re left not really knowing every plot point.

But even more importantly, Captain Marvel punches a cute old lady on a bus. And she punches her hard. Really hard. This nice sweet old lady:

Grandma no!

And that, dear readers, is enough to make me seriously intrigued. Check out the trailer:

Now the reason for this shocking smackdown can likely be traced back to an alien race known as the skrull. The skrull have been at war with another alien race, the kree, for ages and have the frightening power to shapeshift. Some can even mimic superhero powers. The kree, you may recall, include Ronan the Accuser, villain of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. He returns in this earlier-set movie presumably as a good guy (or at least not-yet-villain.)

The skrull

Since Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson) is half-kree via mutation, the skrull would be her natural enemies. And if this old lady is a skrull in disguise, well, the punch would make sense. Given her superhuman strength, she’d better be right or you just watched Captain Marvel kill an innocent elderly lady. That’s dark for the MCU.

Captain Marvel is slated to hit theaters on March 8th, 2019, just two months before the next Avengers film. Given that one secret ending in Infinity War, expect the movie to act as a bridge of sorts between the two Avengers films.

Here’s the movie’s poster which was also just released:
