Fortnite has launched season 8 as of this past week, which it calls “Cubed” due to the sheer amount of Cubes that fell from the sky at the end of season 7 and now populate the map.
We are essentially flashing back to the original Cube-based season in Chapter 1, albeit with a lot more cubes this time around, including a special Gold Cube that no one really seems to know the purpose of.
Like the original Cube, all the Cubes have started rolling around the map. And while it’s going to take them a long time to get where they’re going, we at least do know, in fact, where they’re heading this time around.
Via dataminer HypeX, we know the final path of all the current Cubes, including the Gold Cube. While last time, the original Cube drew a Cube-shaped image on the map, that’s not what’s happening this time:
Rather, all the Cubes are heading toward the middle of the map, the Zero Point area where a ton of stuff has happened for a few seasons now. Previously on the old map, the Cube made its way to Loot Lake, dissolved in the lake, reformed under an island, lifted up the island, and then blew up. So, what happens when multiple Cubes are here now? And what special powers does the Golden Cube have? What’s happening with our friend the Blue Cube? So many Cube-related questions.
I’m not quite sure on the timeline of this. It seems like the Golden Cube has to do a full circuit of the entire map before making it to the middle, according to HypeX’s map. This could be a season-ending event, which means that we have a long ways to go, or something may unfold mid-season and progress to a new stage. I feel like this has to be something more interesting than the Cubes melting and/or blowing up again like last time, and as much as I liked the first Cube, I’m not just sure “more Cubes” is interesting enough at this point. They’re going to need to do something new.
In any case, you don’t really need to track the Cubes as they roll, given that we know where they’re going. Stay tuned for whatever happens when they get there, as I’m sure it will be something we don’t want to miss.
