  • Ben & Jerry’s will give out free ice cream cones at scoop shops on April 8. This is the 46th year the company has hosted Free Cone Day. The promotion started as a thank-you to customers who helped the company survive its first winter in Vermont.

Let’s be honest with ourselves… The New Year’s resolution to eat better and avoid sugar? If it’s not forgotten at this point, but it’s on very unsteady legs. And Ben & Jerry’s might have just delivered the knockout punch.

The ice-cream chain has announced the date for this year’s Free Cone Day. And you’ve got just over a month before temptation goes into overdrive.

Tuesday, April 8, is when this year’s giveaway will take place. Whether your preferences is Chunky Monkey or Phish Food, you’ll be able to pick up a cone for free.

Last year, the chain set a record with fans taking over 1 million scoops of free ice cream.

"Free Cone Day has always been about gratitude—we want to thank our fans for being the best fans in the world with free ice cream and a moment of pure joy," said Dave Stever, Ben & Jerry's CEO.

This will be the 46th year Ben & Jerry’s has offered a free day of ice cream in its shops. It was first offered by founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in 1979 to thank customers for helping the shop survive its first winter—a particularly brutal year where the average temperatures fell to 14.1 degrees and there were 52.9 inches of snow in Burlington, Vt. (Not exactly the sort of weather that encourages one to chow down on a cup of Cherry Garcia.)
