Here’s what ‘Tecmo Super Bowl’ predicts for Chiefs-Eagles Super Bowl LVII

The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will square off on Sunday, Feb. 12 in Super Bowl LVII.

Everyone is wondering how the game might go in a matchup between two high-powered offenses and two defenses that like to get after the quarterback. To pass the time, some people run simulations on the latest Madden video game, but the folks at tecmobowl.org released an official simulation using an updated ROM of the Nintendo Entertainment System classic “Tecmo Super Bowl.”

So what does the retro 8-bit game predict about the outcome of the Super Bowl? Chiefs fans aren’t going to be thrilled by the results. Patrick Mahomes has a good game, but Philadelphia seems to shut the running game down entirely. Containing Jalen Hurts in the ground game appears to be a big struggle for Kansas City. The offense also stalls out in the third quarter, which we’ve seen happen before.

Eventually, the Eagles tie things up to send the game into overtime. The Chiefs take a page out of Doug Pederson’s book and try to surprise them with an onside kick, but it doesn’t work. Unfortunately, the updated ROM doesn’t follow the NFL’s new overtime rules that would give Kansas City another possession, so the Eagles are able to win 27-24 in overtime.

Surely, things will go a lot differently than “Super Tecmo Bowl” predicts. It is, however, pretty neat to see the updated rosters and a simulation of the upcoming Super Bowl on this classic football video game.
