Here’s how ‘The Simpsons’ could finally end, according to a show writer

The Simpsons has been a significant part of the television landscape since we first met the legendary family members - Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie in 1989 (and 1990 in the UK).

But now long-time Simpsons writer Al Jean has revealed what fans could expect when they finally bid adieu to Springfield.

In a recent conversation with the RadioTimes.com, Jean revealed that the iconic show would likely conclude how it began, taking viewers back to the Christmas pageant.

Jean, who previously said that the show was on the verge of ending in 2011 after season 23, said: “I mentioned that there would be an ending where the last episode, they’d be going back to the Christmas pageant from the first episode [Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire] so that the whole series was a continuous loop – that’s how I would end it if I had to.”

Because the show is doing “really well on Disney Plus in the US and the UK and other countries in the America” at the moment, Jean doesn’t think the show is coming to an end anytime soon.

“I don’t see anybody going, ‘let’s wrap it up, or figure out how to get out of it’ at the moment.’ I think we’re the number one scripted show in the US, and with the new episodes as well,” he said.

Jean also further reflected on whether The Simpsons, which recently marked its milestone 700th episode, will reach the 1,000 episode mark.

“I calculated that if we make it to 1,000 episodes, that’s 12 more seasons… So I’ll just be saying, I’ll be very happy to be here in 12 seasons’ time… [but] it’s not just a hop, skip and a jump, it’s a little further than that…”

“Roasting on an Open Fire” was the first full-length episode of the renowned cartoon series, and it follows the Simpson family as they struggle to make ends meet after the antagonist, Mr Burns intends to eliminate Christmas bonuses at the power plant.

Marge is forced to use their much-needed Christmas cash to remove a tattoo Bart had gotten as an unwise Christmas gift, further complicating the situation.

After many decades and countless narratives, it would be fantastic to see the squad return back to this moment.
