Here's How Much Money Rihanna Made from the Super Bowl

Rihanna performed the halftime show at Super Bowl LVII, and according to a number of other reports, a football game was also played.

It was the “Umbrella” singer’s first public performance in years, and it set the internet ablaze, inspiring memes based on the video-game like floating stages.

Don’t Miss: If You Enjoy This Airport Perk, Get Ready: A Crackdown Is Coming

The Super Bowl is almost always the most watched television event of the year, and that will almost certainly remind the case in 2023, as it's hard to see anything else beating the 113 million viewers who tuned in. (Though maybe “The Last Of Us” finale will pull an unlikely upset.)

How Much Do You Make From Playing The Super Bowl?

Despite the cultural dominance of the NFL, performers are actually not paid to play the Super Bowl, as part of NFL policy, though they do get their production and travel costs covered.

Even if they don’t get paid for their time, it’s basically free advertising for the performers, who typically see a bump in sales for tickets and their back catalog. Justin Timberlake sales rose 534% after his 2018 performance, as reported by Esquire, and sales of Lady Gaga, sales of her digital catalog spiked 1000% following her 2017 performance.

Unlike those two, Rihanna has indicated that neither a new album nor a tour are on the way, as she is pregnant with her second child.

Rihanna Had A Royalty Bump

Now if she ever decides to get back out there, her loyal fans (aka the Rihanna Navy) will no doubt be ready and waiting.

But for now, she’s already seeing a nice bump in streams of her back catalog, as tabulated by the Japanese casino comparison site Japan-101, which tracked the Spotify (SPOT) plays of each song performed during her set, to see which ones popped off the most. They tracked plays over three days, and then multiplied each one by $0.004, the average Spotify royalty earnings.

  • “Umbrella” – 4.4 million plays earning $17,780.60
  • “We Found Love” – 3.8 million plays earning $15,227.01

  • “Diamonds” – 3.5 million plays earning $14,160.66

  • “Only Girl (In the World)” – 2.9 million plays earning $11,800.12

  • “Where Have You Been” – 2.3 million plays earning $9,302.04

  • “Work” – 2 million plays earning $8,203.48

  • “Rude Boy” – 1.8 million earning $7,523.72

  • “B**ch Better Have My Money” – 1.6 million plays earning $6,753.48

  • “Pour it up” – 1.5 million plays earning $6,351.74

In total, she earned $97,102.85 in Spotify royalties in three days from her performance. If that seems a bit low, well, ask any musician what they really think of Spotify royalties and then strap in for a lengthy venting session.
