Here's everything you need to know about changes to the COVID-19 Check in TAS app

The changes to the Check in TAS app requirements explained

There's been some changes to how Tasmanians will check in to venues for coronavirus contact tracing purposes.

From Wednesday, July 7, Tasmanians aged 16 years and older will have to use the Check in TAS app whenever they enter a premises.

Here's everything you need to know.

Even just to get a coffee?

Yes.

Previously you only had to check in if you spent 15 minutes or more at a venue, but from today entering a venue is enough to require a check in.

It's not just dining-in patrons who need to check in at cafes.

Why the change?

It's a contact tracing change prompted by the Delta strain of coronavirus.

Premier Peter Gutwein said in his press conference last Friday that there had been instances around the country where "minimal brush past contact which has led to transmission of the virus".

Where do I need to check in?

The types of places this new requirement comes into effect for today includes restaurants and cafes, pubs, churches, cinemas, nightclubs, museums, tourist venues, real estate auctions and open homes, gyms, swimming pools and health clubs.

And yes, there will be paper versions for those Tasmanians who don't have a smart phone with them.

What about my supermarket or shopping centre?

That's the other change.

A whole new range of premises including supermarkets, shopping centres, big box retailers, accommodation and educational providers, and aged care facilities will need to be using Check in TAS by July 31, if they're not already doing so.

I am a business owner, how do I know if I need the Check in TAS app?

The Department of Health has already published a list of places that need the app in place, and they'll be given an almost month-long grace period to phase it in.

My work uses Check in TAS. Do I need to use the app each time I enter the building?

No.

Those checking in at work will only need to use the app once each day.

What if I don't have a smartphone?

If you're with a group of people, they will be able to check in on your behalf on the app.

Otherwise, staff at each premises can check you in manually.
