Here Are The Best New Drama Series Worth Binging Over Your Holiday Break

Fanging to sink your teeth into a new drama series? We’ve got you covered.

Paramount+ has been knocking it out of the park with a bunch of fresh new drama series this year, so here are our picks for the ones you should absolutely catch up on over the holiday break.

The Agency

For the romantic spy fans in the chat, The Agency, starring Michael Fassbender, is a terrific entry into the genre.

The series follows Martian (played by Fassbender), a covert CIA agent who is ordered to abandon the undercover life he’s built for years and return to his spy agency for a new mission.

However, Martian’s former lover Sami (Jodie Turner-Smith) suddenly reappears in his life, and the two secretly continue their romance. As you can imagine, his mission is put into conflict with his desire to be with former lover (awww) as he continues to run head-first into international espionage.

If you’ve ever watched the super sweet wholesome anime SpyxFamily and wondered what a realistic retelling of the story would look like, this is it. A gritty, nailbiting drama that dives into the messed up psychology of being a covert spy.

The series also boasts a stacked cast, including Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, Katherine Waterson, and John Magaro.

The Agency is now streaming only on Paramount+.

Landman

Landman is Paramount’s latest hit, and the best way I can describe it is that it’s like a mix between Yellowstone and There Will Be Blood. You’ve got oil, people in cowboy hats, and crime syndicates. What’s not to love?

The series is set in the high-stakes oil industry in West Texas, where oil riggers can end up paying dearly with their lives. For some, though, it’s worth it, as they can become richer than their wildest dreams.

The cast is led by Billy Bob Thornton and Ali Larter, along with Demi Moore and Jon Hamm himself. Thornton plays anti-hero Tommy Norris, a man who’s lost it all in the oil industry. Ever the ruthless businessman, he schemes and fights his way to get back on top while watching buddy Monty Miller (Jon Hamm) roll around in all his oil-rigger wealth.

The first four episodes of Landman are now available to stream only on Paramount+.

Dexter: Original Sin

Dexter’s back, baby and if you’re looking for a sweet hit of 90s nostalgia, Dexter: Original Sin is tailor-made for you.

The cast is filled with horror greats, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey. It’s safe to say it’s a dream ensemble for fans who grew up with the Scream franchise.

The show takes place in 1991, when Dexter makes his first human kill. Fans of the original series would know that while we did get some flashbacks where Michael C Hall rocked this iconic wig, we didn’t actually see him murder anyone.

Dexter: Original Sin details how Dexter learned to abide by The Code with the help of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), while also working as an intern at the Miami Metro Police Department so he can learn how to cover his tracks. If you love the Dexter franchise and cat and mouse-style murder series, this one is for you.

Dexter: Original Sin drops on Paramount+ on December 13th.

Matlock

If you told me that I’d be obsessed with a Matlock revival TV series, I’d ask you to call me Abe Simpson, book me in at the nearest retirement home and stuff my mouth with jelly. Alas, I am obsessed with the new Matlock series and stuffing my mouth with jelly anyway.

Horror movie superstar Kathy Bates plays the shrewd but charming lawyer Madeline Matlock in this reboot of the classic legal drama Matlock (released in 1986). Madeline, a 70-something attorney, swindles her way into a prestigious law firm, using her unassuming nature and sharp mind to tackle cases and outwit her opponents.

The show has honestly become an instant comfort watch for me, and Kathy Bates kills it in the role. She’s like the cool grandma who would bake you cookies and then beat up your school bully all at once. How can you root against that?

Most importantly, the show is also a gripping drama that sucks you into the legal world. If you love shows like Better Call Saul mixed with Suits, you’ll love this.

New episodes of Matlock are dropping weekly on Paramount+.

Fake

We were all horrified watching the Tinder Swindler documentary last year. Fake dives into that anxiety of getting cat-fished by a Tinder date who’s a little too good to the next level. Even worse, the show is based on a true story, so park that at the back of your mind while watching.

Starring Asher Keddie and David Wenham, Fake follows features writer Birdie Bell (Keddie) as she begins a relationship with a man named Joe Burt, whom she met on a dating app. After a quick drink at a bar, her mind says to put him in the ‘ghost’ bin, but her loneliness drowns out her doubts.

Shortly after, the pair go on a romantic trip to an isolated mansion where Birdie learns Joe isn’t the man she thinks he is and is now in serious danger.

All episodes of Fake are now available to watch on Paramount+.

Lioness

Lioness is yet another series from Taylor Sheridan. However, it ditches the cowboys and ranches and replaces them with tense military operations that’ll raise your heart rate. If you’re more of a fan of his work with Sicario, then Lioness will scratch that itch for you. While the show debuted last year, it’s already back with another season, upping the stakes even more.

The show follows a special operations Marine named Joe (played by Zoë Saldaña), who leads the Lioness Program — an undercover unit dedicated to befriending the wives, girlfriends and daughters of terrorist targets. Lioness’ goal is to win the women over in the hopes they’ll betray the men they have intel on by spilling it directly to the American government.

You can catch up on season one and season two on Paramount+.
