Henry Shefflin reveals double blow for Galway following Wexford draw

Henry Shefflin has revealed a set-back for Jason Flynn in his recovery while Conor Whelan has also been added to the Galway hurlers' casualty list after their dramatic Leinster SHC opener this afternoon.

The Tribesmen were without nine of the 20 players who lost to Waterford in last year's All-Ireland qualifier for today's dramatic opening draw away to Wexford.

Whelan limped off in the second half with what Shefflin later described as a "slight hamstring" as the hosts staged a late comeback to share the spoils - Wexford were six points adrift in the 63rd minute but Conor McDonald's goal and four late points from Lee Chin secured a point for Darragh Egan's side.

Whelan is a doubt for next weekend's Salthill encounter with Westmeath.

While Wexford boss Egan chose not to speak afterwards in support of the GPA's current stance, Shefflin did talk to the media and explained that marksman Flynn - absent since suffering a hamstring injury in Galway's Walsh Cup opener in January - had suffered a set-back.

That is a blow for Galway given how wasteful they were - the visitors hit 10 wides inside half an hour in Wexford.

"Jason is still a bit away yet, unfortunately," said Shefflin. "He had a little small setback a couple of weeks ago so it will push him back by another week or two.

"It's just a work in progress unfortunately."

Ronan Glennon, who was a find for Shefflin during the League, wasn't involved in Wexford as he also has a hamstring injury.

Asked if he would be involved this summer, Shefflin replied: "Well, it all depends on how well we perform in the Leinster Championship, truthfully.

"Yeah, I think it's going to be tight for Ronan. It's six matches, five weeks, and that hamstring injury is obviously six or eight weeks so he's going to be stretched to see for the latter stages of it."
