Henry Cavill will NOT return as Superman; says, 'My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will'

Henry Cavill is hanging up his cape!

Just over a month after the actor made his superhero return as Superman in Dwayne Johnson's 'Black Adam', he broke the 'sad news' to fans in an Instagram post.

"I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone," he wrote in his note and went on add, "I will, after all, not be returning as Superman."

Sharing a note on his handle, without any supporting caption, he wrote, "After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life."

He went on to add, "The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."

Henry concluded, "For those who have been by my side through the years…..we can mourn for a bit, but then we must remember…. Superman is still around. Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there! My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards."

The actor's exit comes as a surprise, especially after DC bosses Peter Safran and James Gunn stressed that they were interested in having Henry be part of the new DC Universe. According to Deadline, Gunn officially made known the plans for the future of the DCEU and apparently, a 'Superman' film is in the works but will focus on the early days of the Man of Steel.

"It's not an origins story," Gunn confirmed and also said that the film will call for a younger actor to play Superman.

Most recently, Henry also announced his exit from the hit Netflix series 'The Witcher'. According to reports, Liam Hemsworth will take up the role in the next season.
