Henley Regatta 2019 dress code: what to wear for a day down by the river

Although Royal Ascot and Wimbledon are considered the highlights of the summer sporting calendar, they aren't the only highly-anticipated events.

Henley Royal Regatta, which kicks off on July 3rd, will welcome five days of rowing races (over 200 to be precise), hospitality, and hopefully, catching some rays by the river.

One of the best-known regattas in the world, Henley attracts thousands of visitors each year. Like Royal Ascot, it also has high sartorial standards to meet.

So, if you are heading down to the Berkshire riverbanks next week, here is the dress code you need to adhere to:

Stewards' Enclosure

Stewards is the top tier enclosure, situated opposite the Finish Line and reserved specifically for members and their guests (FYI, the waiting list to become a member is currently between 6 to 10 years).

Within the enclosure there are three seating areas - Members' Grandstand, Fawley Grandstand and the Floater - as well as bars, shops and restaurants.

Ladies Dress Code

Women are required to wear dresses or skirts, where the hemline is below the knee.

No trousers of any kind are allowed to be worn by women - surprising, not least since even Royal Ascot allow jumpsuits and trouser suits. Divided skirts and culottes are also prohibited.

Women are also advised to wear a hat. Although not a requirement, it is very much customary in this enclosure.

Gentlemen Dress Code

Men should wear lounge suits, or, if earned, a club or team blazer with chinos. Jackets should be worn at all times and must be paired with a tie or cravat.

Whilst it's not compulsory, you may also see men sporting boaters or panama hats, which are encouraged.

Shorts, jeans and novelty attire are not permitted.

Children Dress Code

Children are also expected to go by to the dress code.

Boys and girls over the age of 13 must adhere to the adult's code. Children under that age must not wear trainers, jeans, sweatshirts or T-shirts.

Regatta Enclosure

Just downstream from Stewards is the Regatta Enclosure, which is open to the general public.

A considerably less formal affair, race-goers heading to this enclosure have no dress code to adhere to. Many who attend, however, enter into the spirit of the 179-year-old event and don their best finery all the same - with men often opting for club blazers or other rowing apparel.

Top tip: Ladies, we would advise against stilettos as the majority of places to stand are on grass. Instead, opt for a sturdy wedge or block heel.

For security reasons too, only small handbags are allowed in the regatta area.
