Hengrove house fire: Crews to return today as cause of huge blaze still unknown

Firefighters are set to return to a badly damaged row of houses in Hengrove today (June 23) after a huge blaze yesterday. There were 33 firefighters deployed to tackle the flames, and thick smoke could be seen for miles around.

The fire took hold of sheds and fencing and spread to four terraced homes on Griggfield Walk. A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Hicks Gate, Temple, Nailsea, Bath, Portishead and Kingswood were called to reports of a house fire. On arrival, firefighters found a fire involving sheds and fencing that had spread to four terraced homes.

"Crews used four jets, three hose reels, a turntable ladder, small gear and gas monitors to extinguish the blaze. Six firefighters wore breathing apparatus for safety. In total,10 fire appliances attended with 33 firefighters on the scene.

"The cause of the fire is currently unknown, fire investigates will return to the scene of the incident on 23/06/2022."

In a tweet shortly after 10pm, the fire brigade confirmed the blaze had been extinguished and said: "The cause of the fire is currently unknown, fire investigation will take place tomorrow."

Images from the scene showed at least two of the terraces looking completely black from fire damage, with collapsed roofs.
