Restoring vital wetlands in Victoria
Nature is a critical ally in addressing climate change. Coastal wetlands can sequester carbon 30 to 50 times faster than other trees, but we’ve lost 65 per cent of our wetlands globally.
“The power of ecosystems like seagrass meadows and salt marshes is that they store carbon in the ground over time. They’re not just storing carbon for the life of a tree (which might be 50 to 100 years), wetlands actually store carbon in the ground across timescales of thousands of years,” explains Dr Paul Carnell, marine scientist at Blue Carbon Lab.
Multiple impacts, including urban development and agriculture, threaten these crucial blue-carbon ecosystems.
Your donation will support Blue Carbon Lab’s research to sequester carbon and restore critical coastal wetland along the Victorian coast.

We all know that Australia is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Our communities are already experiencing the impacts of a warming climate and the largest documented decline in biodiversity of any continent.
Greening Australia is helping to restore landscapes in Australia with innovative, science-based initiatives that support native wildlife, increase biodiversity, improve water quality and help sequester carbon from our atmosphere.
