Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for Qatar shouldn’t generate too many surprises - this is Gareth Southgate after all. However, there are still a handful of spots in his 26-man squad up for grabs.
Injuries have robbed the England boss of Reece James and Ben Chilwell, opening the door for even more defenders, including hopefully Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Gary Neville reckons the right-back would be an accident waiting to happen in a World Cup knockout game, saying: “He does rash things and I think he is giving away a penalty in a World Cup.”

Neville went on to say that Southgate “already has four brilliant right-backs”, negating the need to take the 24-year-old. Is he right, is Trent too much of a liability to take to the World Cup?
And what of the Three Lions’ creative and attacking options?
Is James Maddison a must, should Ivan Toney go and will there be a sixth successive major tournament appearance for Jordan Henderson?
Henderson’s family have already said they are uneasy about travelling to Qatar amid fears about their safety. But would it be a wasted trip anyway, with Jude Bellingham’s emergence, Declan Rice’s form and the return to fitness of Kalvin Phillips rendering him surplus to requirements?
