People in West Lothian are being urged to get advice if they are struggling after it was announced that energy bills are set to soar by 54 per cent in April.
The energy cap has been raised and it’s expected to mean the average household pay an extra £693 a year.
Ofgem confirmed yesterday that the new cap will increase before prices are expected rise yet again in October, when the cap is next reviewed.
It comes amid fears of a cost of living crisis, as the National Insurance is also set to rise in April and households are already feeling the pinch with increased food costs.
Andrew Bartlett, chief executive of Advice Direct Scotland, said the sharp rise would be a “devastating blow for many households across Scotland.”.
But he said help is available for anyone worried about their bills.
He continued: “It will cause deep anxiety and financial worries, leaving many people facing the stark choice of heating or eating.
“But Scots don’t have to struggle alone – free, impartial and practical advice is available to everyone in Scotland through our energyadvice.scot service.
“And charities and organisations in Scotland which provide debt, money or energy advice can sign up at homeheatingadvice.scot as a ‘referral partner’ to access a £3m Scottish Government fund for those in fuel poverty or rationing their energy use.”
Help is also available from the Advice Shop West Lothian.
