Helicopter search for missing South Bristol woman

A major emergency services operation successfully located a vulnerable missing person in South Bristol last night.

The National Police Air Service helicopter was scrambled and flew over Bedminster Down, Bishopsworth and Ashton Vale for more than an hour last night to assist officers on the ground.

The woman, who has not been named, was reported missing in the South Bristol area at around 9pm, and by 9.30pm, a large police presence had gathered on the A38 Bridgwater Road.

One eyewitness told Bristol Live he counted up to 11 police vehicles, including two vans and an unmarked car, in the area near the South Bristol Crematorium at around 9.30pm.

The NPAS helicopter arrived at around that time, and searched the area for more than an hour.

The north western side of Bedminster Down is heavily wooded, dropping down steeply to the Bristol-Taunton railway line, with Ashton Vale and open fields beyond, so a large number of police officers joined the search for the woman, who was classed as a vulnerable missing person.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police confirmed the woman was located safely at around 11pm.
