Helicopter deployed after forest fire burns for days

A helicopter has been spotted while firefighters tackle a mountain fire which has lasted for "a number of days". The chopper was seen above Cwmbach Mountain near Cefnpennar Road in Aberdare.

Local resident Tori David said she saw the helicopter pouring water over the flames throughout Sunday. The 23-year-old said she was on her way to take pictures of nature on the mountain at around 9am when she saw smoke.

She said: "I went up to Cefnpennar at about 9.30am and the fire helicopter crew were putting out the fire. It was going over the other side of the valley to collect more water. It stayed up there until around 6pm. The mountain is still smoking now. This is the first fire we have seen this year, we had another a few years ago. It is quite close to my house.

"It makes me upset to see because I love wildlife. I have learning difficulties and I take photos of birds which I find very relaxing. I love nature and find it comforting. The fire service did a fantastic job."

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said the fire has been smouldering for a number of days and crews continue to monitor the situation. He said: "It's an ongoing incident that we have been dealing with for a number of days. We are currently monitoring the incident and expect there to be more smoke and smouldering. There will be regular inspections."
