Helensburgh named one of the UK's best places to see the cherry blossom bloom

Helensburgh in Argyll and Bute has been named one of the best places in the whole of the UK to see the cherry blossom bloom this spring.

The Scottish town was named alongside spots across the UK, including Chirk Castle in Wrexham and Greenwich Park in London.

Introducing their list, the experts over at the travel site Saga said the cherry blossom bloom is one of the "most exciting" things about the spring.

They added that while Japan is famed around the world for its wonderful cherry blossoms, the UK and Scotland are also starting to get a global reputation.

Why was Helensburgh named one of the best places in the UK to see the cherry blossom bloom?

According to Saga, the "iconic" pink and white cherry blossoms "take over" the town of Helensburgh every spring.

The trees here are said to be the only urban tree collection included in the National Tree Collections of Scotland, making them truly unique.

Visitors can find the pink variety of the beautiful trees lining Stafford Street and West King Street, while pink cherry blossom lovers will be at home on Colquhoun Street, West Princes Street, John Street and Lomond Street.

The travel site adds that there’s even a mile-long avenue of pink cherry blossoms on West Argyle Street.

To help those coming to the town, the Helensbugh Tree Conservation Trust has created a map showing where to find these flowering trees.

This comes after Helensburgh was voted one of the best places in the UK for seeing the annual spectacle.

Holidaying site Selfcatering.co.uk surveyed some 2000 travellers to find the most popular places to visit across the UK.

It was also found that visits to the area explode by 37% during this time of year, highlighting the popularity of the spring bloom.

Discussing the location, travel expert Richard Young said: "Helensburgh is already a wonderful spot to visit, but with the blossoming trees, West Argyle Street is certainly earning a reputation for itself as a must-see for anyone seeking picture-perfect moments.

"Our research has shown that visitors to the area increase by 37% during the end of March, with bookings also increasing for long weekends."
