Helena Bonham Carter recalls awkward Julian Sands kiss while filming Room With A View

Helena Bonham Carter revealed her mother put actor Julian Sands 'off' when he was tasked with kissing her in filming for hit movie A Room with A View.

The actress, now 56, played Lucy Honeychurch while Julian, 65, undertook the role of George Emerson in the 1985 flick.

One moment in the movie sees the pair's characters lock lips in an Italian poppy field, which made for an incredibly romantic movie moment.

Helena was 18 at the time of filming the scene in the Oscar-nominated film and previously shared the difficulty of filming the scene, despite it being branded one of the most romantic movie moments of all time.

She said 2015: "You know the kiss that ended up being, everyone loved? That was totally improvised, right at the last minute.

"They were desperately always trying to find cornflowers, but there were only things, we only had poppies," Helena told Citroen Collection.

"And then because of the sunset we’d been waiting for days, I think, if I remember, to try and get this kiss, it had to be on the magic moment, whatever that means. And suddenly it was like, 'Okay, you’re on, just do the kiss. Julian, you stand there; Helena, just walk!'"

She added: "It’s very hard to walk across a plowed field in high heels, and, oh God, it was hard work. I just knew I had to get to him without falling down.

"And then not laugh when he kissed me. And it’s really hard to kiss someone when you’re only eighteen and you haven’t done it that many times, too. So it was hard, that was hard."

Another scene in the hit film, based on the novel by E.M Foster, shows Lucy and George locking lips in a wooded area.

Harry Potter actress Helena revealed the second kiss between the pair was even harder as Helena's mother arrived on set – which Julian found "really off-putting".

She described: "And then my mum came, that was really off-putting to Julian, so he had to kiss me again in the bushes somewhere and mum was bang in his eyeline – that was putting him off, he had to say 'excuse me could you erm...'

"And John Malkovich for some reason – he was knitting because he was a good friend of Julian's. There were lots of weird memories."

Following Helena's appearance in the film, the actress' career skyrocketed and she has since had roles in The Crown, Sweeney Todd, Oceans Eight and many more.

Meanwhile Julian went on to undertake roles in the smaller screen and has had roles in hit TV shows like Gotham, Elementary, Dexter and Smallville.

Hollywood star Julian has been confirmed as one of the two missing hikers at Gabriel Mountains in California.

Julian was last seen in the Mount Baldy area on Friday and his family haven't been in contact with him since then.

Authorities still hope the actor – who has been described as "an adventurer in everything he did" – will be found as his friends and family are praying for his safe return.

A spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s department said in a statement with PA news agency: "On Friday, January 13, at about 7:30 pm, a hiker, identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood was reported missing in the Baldy Bowl area.

"Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue crews responded and began a search. Because of avalanche risks and trail conditions, the ground crews were pulled off the mountain on Saturday evening.

"However, we continue to search by helicopter and drones when the weather permits."
