Helen Skelton under fire for 'thick' remark on Yorkshire farm

Presenter Helen Skelton has come under fire for a comment she made in Thursday's live episode of Summer On The Farm - her first TV series since splitting from her husband.

The 38-year-old is hosting popular Channel 5 show Summer on the Farm live from Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley this week alongside co-star Martin Hughes-Games. Fans have loved seeing her stunning wardrobe ideas as she's appeared on our screens this week.

During Thursday's episode of Summer On The Farm a new arrival was born at Cannon Hall. Helen and co-host Martin were live from the Tepee where Franny the cow had just given birth to her calf during the early hours of Thursday morning.

Farmers, Rob and Dave claimed the calf was a "surprise to us both" as she had it all by herself during the night. They claimed he was "belter" - Rob added the "little boy drinks like Dave on a Friday night."

Following the birth, Helen Skelton, made a comment asking why you don't see many male cows on the farm - and was immediately jumped on by viewers for the 'thick' question.

@HelenTh45011085 tweeted: "I cannot believe she is so thick given the programme she is fronting. Feel sorry for her fellow presenters."

@LindaTarff added: "@HelenSkelton you’ve just ask why you don’t see many male calf’s ? You do know what Veal is … the life of a cow is milk or meat!"

@upthetoon87 said: "Thats because male calves have a tendency to be shot as soon as they're born @helenskelton #SummerOnTheFarmLive"

Tonight's episode appeared full of new babies as the beautiful evening sun went down over the Tepee viewers saw their first glimpse of foal, Orange, daughter of Shetland pony, Alice. Helen claimed to viewers she "couldn't get over the view" during the episode.

As families appeared to be the theme tonight a father and son, who are 4th and 5th generation Wheelright's with over 20+ years of experience showed Helen and Martin how to make wooden wheels for caravans and karts. During the live demonstration Helen asked if the burning iron was "red hot," which Martin mocked her for.

The TV star had been holding the hammer the wrong way round when making a wheel - before saying to her co-host, Martin, "its a good job we like each other or that could have gone horribly wrong." The Wheelrighters claimed this could have been the first time their skill had been shown live on TV before.

Martin also mocked Helen for the way Northerner's say "reet" - the 38-year-old claimed Martin is traumatised that people around here say hello like that.

Towards the end of the episode Helen and Martin asked Dr Amir Khan how we can help butterflies, who are becoming endangered. He explained a plate of fruit left in the garden would be a great way to help feed butterflies. Helen made a remark to her children, she said: Butterflies would love that, but if I hung that in my garden my kids would love that too."

Summer on the Farm 2022 is on until Friday, July 8 every night at 8pm on Channel 5.
