Helen Skelton's emotional message to viewers on first TV series since split from husband

Presenter Helen Skelton has shared a touching message with her audience during her first TV series return since she split from her husband.

The 38-year-old, best known for presenting Countryfile, was back on screen tonight to kick off five-part series Summer on the Farm. The Channel 5 programme will see Helen and co-host Martin Hughes-Games celebrate the best of the British countryside live from Cannon Hall Farm in South Yorkshire.

Helen, who was born in Carlisle, Cumbria, recently separated from her Leeds Rhinos husband Richie Myler with whom she has three children. During tonight's episode, she took a trip down memory lane when she returned to her native Cumbria.

Taking viewers through the magnificent countryside, Helen planned on hiking up Buttermere to show off the fantastic views - despite the weather not exactly playing ball.

"I grew up around here and it always feels special to come back even if it is a typically murky Cumbrian summers day," Helen told viewers.

"This for me is probably the equivalent of most women going on spa and having a massage. Just the space, the view and I think I was probably around 30 when I realised 'oh, green stuff does make me happy' and I know that's a weird thing to say but I was looking out of my window of the house I was living in and I thought 'I love looking at trees'."

She admitted that the solitude and silence felt "odd" given the fact that she is a mum of three young children and the proud owner of a small dog. Helen then encountered a herd of cows, prompting her to reminisce about growing up on a dairy farm and spending lots of time with the animals.

Eventually, it started to rain but the weather did nothing to dampen Helen's spirits. Instead she said there was "no point to whinge" and that the regular rainfall is the reason why Cumbria is so green and beautiful.

She said: "You've just got to laugh it up. When the sun does come out - which it will at some point - you'll appreciate it all that bit more."

She later stopped for a break and a cuppa in the rain, telling viewers that there was a lesson to be learned. She said: "There is something really grounding about embracing the elements and doing your day anyway.

"It's a good lesson for life. Life throws things at you that you don't want to have to deal with. Sometimes you find yourself in a storm you don't really want to be in and if you can find a way to muddle through, you'll come out the other side. And the sun will always come out in the end."

Helen announced her split from Leeds Rhinos star and husband Richie Myler a few months ago.

Summer on the Farm 2022 airs from Monday, July 4 to Friday, July 8 on Channel 5 at 8pm.
