A man who was receiving hospital treatment after being stabbed has been jailed after police found a lock knife in his bag.
Jack Murray was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary after being stabbed in South Shields on May 29 this year. But after receiving treatment, police officers searched his bag and found a lock knife inside. The 21-year-old, who refused to identify his attacker, was then arrested.
Murray, of Hexham Avenue, Hebburn, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on Friday to be sentenced for possession of an offensive weapon. He had pleaded guilty to the charge at a previous hearing.

The court heard that police were called to an area near a Tesco store in South Shields after reports of a stabbing - the victim of which was Murray. Michael Bunch, prosecuting said: "The defendant was attended to by ambulance staff and was taken to the RVI. Upon arrival the police took clothing from him and obtained from his bag a flick knife, the item was in his possession. He was then arrested after being treated."
Murray was interviewed the next day but gave no reply, he also refused to provide details to police regarding the person who stabbed him. The court heard he had seven previous convictions for eight offences, including criminal damage and possession of a knife.
Nick Lane, defending, said Murray, who has autism, is a "vulnerable young man" who "accepts that he acted irresponsibly and inappropriately". He said: "He has placed himself in a perilous position. There is no evidence that the knife was produced and it is unlikely he would have used the knife to cause harm to any person. He says he had it with him in a bag."
Mr Lane added: "He is still a young man who has had a troubled upbringing, but has in recent months, through the support of his new partner and his foster mum, has established some stability. He has cut down his alcohol use and now only drinks in moderation."
Sentencing Murray, Recorder David Gordon said he committed the offences whilst serving a community order and handed him a 146 day prison sentence.
