Hebburn granddad's royal double as he marks 88th birthday on King Charles' coronation day

Hebburn grandfather Lewis Whittle marked his 88th birthday on King Charles' coronation - which means, in a rare royal coincidence, he was born on the date of George V's Silver Jubilee back in 1935.

Lewis, who worked much of his life as a turner at the Reyrolle factory in the South Tyneside town, is still going strong, as his wife Teresa who is also in her 80s. To mark the special occasion, the family took a coronation day trip to Colman's Fish and Chips in South Shields.

There, surrounded by his family, Lewis had a cracking - ever-so-slightly royal 88th birthday.

Lewis's son Colin, who is one of the organisers involved with the NUFC Fans food bank collections, told ChronicleLive: "Dad was 88 on Saturday. And he had just happened to mention that he was born on this other Royal landmark.

"We just went for a bit to eat and had a family time. Have to be honest I'm not much of a royalist myself! Of course it was a lovely day and it's lovely going somewhere you can look out at the sea.

"Dad's still going strong, and still going on about Jackie Milburn! He's lived in Hebburn for sixty years."

King Charles' coronation took place on May 6, exactly 88 years after his great-grandfather's Silver Jubilee. People around the North East watched the occasion on big screens, though the Whittles were, of course, more focussed on celebrating Lewis' own milestone.
