Heavy snow falling across parts of UK as Brits wake up to post-winter wonderland

Brits have woken up to a thick blanket of snow this morning following the sudden cold snap last night.

Cautious forecasts that a small amount of flakes might fall overnight have been surpassed for those living in the east of the country, where several inches have settled.

West Yorkshire has enjoyed the best of it, with several hours of snowfall leading to a crisp and deep blanket come the early hours.

There has also been significant snowfall in Manchester and Durham.

The frosty turn, which is being powered by a blast of air from the Artic, comes a week after the start of Spring and a run of unusually warm temperatures, blue sky and sunshine.

Yesterday the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning in Scotland, forecasting wintry showers expected to turn into snow and hail in the early hours of this morning.

The forecaster said up to 5cm of the white stuff could fall on high ground, with there being a chance of the wintry weather coming further south.

In Redcard one man caught the moment a flash of lighting ripped through the sky amid the snowfall.

In Garforth, Leeds, another man snapped a photo of his garden iced with snow, with frosted trees rising into the fresh morning sky.

David William, also from the city, found himself battling the elements to get going this morning.

"Digging out a whole snow covered hill to get the car up it, is not how I thought I’d spend my morning," he wrote on Twitter.

The sudden change of weather has come as frosty shock for those who had got their summer wardrobe out last week and had been enjoying the sunshine.

The weather today marks around a 10C swing from this time last week.

The cold snap makes it even colder in the UK than Reykjavik which is set to remain above zero for the coming week.

The Met Office warned that people should expect possible travel disruption from 8pm last night as dropping temperatures meant some untreated roads and pavements would become slippery.

They issued a yellow warning ranging from Derbyshire and into eastern Scotland, running until 10am this morning.

"Further wintry showers overnight Wednesday and early Thursday may lead to fairly widespread icy patches, particularly on untreated surfaces," the forecaster said.

"Some accumulations of snow are also possible, particularly across eastern Scotland and hillier areas of northeast England."

Temperatures were predicted to get as low as -8C in parts of Scotland overnight.

The air coming down from the Artic today is forecast to last until the end of the week, keeping temperatures far lower than last week.

Winds could reach 50mph on the east coast, making temperatures of 6C or 7C feel more like freezing.

The Met Office extended the area of its yellow weather warning on Thursday morning, pushing it as far south as parts of Essex, inland to the East Midlands and East Anglia.

Icy showers are forecast for the east coast of Scotland and north east of England today.

"Some accumulations of snow are also possible, particularly across eastern Scotland and hillier areas of northeast England. 1-2 cm accumulations are possible mainly above 100 m, with 5 cm over parts of Scotland, Northumberland and the North York Moors above 200-300 m," the forecaster warned.

As the weekend goes on the weather is expected to pick up slightly, with temperatures forecast to rise into early next week.

The weather has had an impact on the roads, causing long delays on the M62.

The delays are in both directions between junction 23 for Huddersfield and junction 21 for Milnrow.

While the snow may be beautiful, it may come as a concern for those who follow the first signs of Spring.

Daffodils which began to bloom in the warm weather last week will find it difficult to endure the frost this morning.
