Heavy rain to batter Scotland this week in 'July washout' as Met Office issues alert

The wet weather is set to continue in Scotland as the Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain covering large parts of the country.

The warning falls into place on Monday afternoon, with downpours expected throughout the day, into the evening and overnight into Tuesday, July 11. Forecasters expect 15-25mm of rainfall, with the showers becoming heaving in some areas amounting to as much as 70mm.

The wet conditions will likely result in spray and flooding, creating difficult driving conditions and possible road closures as well as other traffic and travel delays. The Met Office is also warning that the heavy rain could result in power cuts in some areas, with flooding of homes and businesses as ell as damage to some buildings as the wet weather continues.

The yellow warning comes as the Met Office gave a verdict on a 'July washout' as days of rain are expected, reports the Mirror.

The Met Office said: "A mostly unsettled picture across the UK for much of this period, with a mixture of sunny spells and showers, but also the potential for longer spells of rain from time to time. Some of the showers will likely be heavy and thundery at times."

Things are expected to feel a little cooler across Scotland in the coming days, compared to the warm temperatures experienced in recent weeks. Highs in the mid to late teens are expected for much of the country this week.

"With time, low pressure is forecast to become centred to the northeast of the UK, with higher pressure trying to edge in from the southwest", the Met Office added

"Given this synoptic set up, it will often be breezy, although winds may be light towards northeastern areas at first, meaning showers will be slow-moving here. With the airmass predominantly originating from the North Atlantic, temperatures will often be on the cool side for the time of year."
