The ACT is expected to be hit by severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and gusty winds as a trough moves from west to east over NSW on Tuesday evening and Wednesday.
Morgan Pumpa from the Bureau of Meteorology said wind gusts of up to 48km/h have already been recorded.
"We see the chance for Canberra and parts of the ACT to see severe thunderstorms, and so that brings the chance of damaging winds, as well as heavy rainfall this evening," she said.
It is forecast Canberra will get 15 to 25 millimetres of rain on Tuesday evening.
"Tomorrow we'll see an easing in the rain and just the chance of about a millimetre. There may be some showers in the early morning, but otherwise nice enough conditions after today once that trough moves through the region," she said.
There is also the chance inland NSW, parts of low Western Riverina, Central West slopes and Central Tablelands will also experience severe thunderstorms and possibly see large hail.
The bureau has not issued a severe weather warning for the ACT yet, but is requesting people monitor the warnings on its website.
"With many people still on school holidays it's important that people monitor the warnings and check the conditions around where they're staying if they're on holiday or just at home, just to be aware of the possible weather this afternoon or this evening," Pumpa said.
