Heavy fog has forced Sydney ferries to stop running with passengers urged to seek alternative transport.

The NSW capital is blanketed in thick fog which the Bureau of Meteorology predicts to clear before the morning's out.

But Sydney's Transport Management Centre has said there is no prediction on when ferry services will resume.

"No Sydney ferry services are currently running due to heavy fog," a statement from the centre said.

"Passengers are advised to delay their trips or use alternative transport.

"There is no forecast for when services will resume."
