Yep, you read that right. Britain is about to bask in some seriously unseasonal sunshine, with a massive 2,000-mile-wide heat dome heading our way. It’s shaping up to be one of those rare moments when we can smugly say we’re hotter than Australia—just in time for the Easter holidays.
Thanks to a high-pressure system stretching from Finland to Ireland, the UK is in for a proper dose of wall-to-wall sunshine this week. Temperatures are expected to soar up to a glorious 24°C, nudging past the warmest day of the year so far (a toasty 23.7°C was recorded last Friday). Not too shabby for early April, right?
Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna summed it up perfectly: “It’s wall-to-wall sunshine for many in the days ahead.” And for once, we believe him.
So, what can we expect? Well, the mercury is already climbing. While the South will be soaking up the best of it, with highs pushing 23°C or 24°C by Friday, even the North isn’t being left out—set to reach a balmy 21°C. That’s warmer than Melbourne, which is currently seeing 19°C as summer winds down over there.
With cloudless skies and up to 12 hours of sunshine a day, it’s looking like prime picnic and pub garden weather. Even Martin Clunes was spotted cooling off with an ice cream in Sherborne, Dorset, while attending the launch of a charity “mermaid tail” trail. If it’s good enough for Doc Martin, it’s good enough for the rest of us.
BBC weatherman Darren Bett chimed in, too, saying the warming trend is expected to continue after a weekend that was already well above average for this time of year.
But before you dust off your BBQ and start planning a beach day, there’s a twist coming. Early next week, the weather could throw a bit of a tantrum. We’re talking thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gusts up to 50mph—particularly in the South and West. So yeah, maybe don’t get too cocky with the flip-flops just yet.
By the time we hit the long Easter weekend, things are expected to settle into a bit of a mix—some sunny spells, a few showers, and still relatively warm at around 17°C. Not quite the scorcher we’re getting midweek, but not bad for a British bank holiday either.
Looking ahead, the Met Office reckons there’ll be a short spell of unsettled weather, but the good times aren’t over yet. Toward the end of April, we could see another wave of warmth returning, with temperatures likely to stay above average.
So, if you’ve been craving a bit of sun therapy after what felt like an endless winter, this might just be your moment. Just don’t forget the suncream—and maybe keep the brolly handy, just in case.
