Heating expert shares radiator hack that could save you £600 a year - using a hairdryer

As hiked-up energy costs continue to take a toll on families across the country, many people are looking for ways to cut back on their bills where they can. While there's only so much that any of us can do to shave pennies off our outgoings in the midst of a cost of living crisis, many experts have been sharing their tried and tested hacks for household appliances that are surprisingly easy to do.

One home appliance expert has claimed that you can save as much as £625 per year on your energy bills by following one easy trick involving a hair dryer.

Matthew Jenkins, the resident heating expert at MyJobQuote, has explained that horizontal radiators will often have convector fins inside them, which are intended to increase the contact surface with the air by increasing convection.

If these fans end up getting dusty, then there will be less heat transferred between them, resulting in reduced efficiency and potential blockages.

As per research conducted by engineering consultants Enertek International, a dirty heating system could well see your energy bills soar by as much as 25%.

The average household in Britain can expect to spend an average of £2,500 per year on their energy bill as of October 2022. MyJobQuote has stated that a dirty heating system could mean an additional £625 being piled on top of the average annual energy bill.

A simple two-step hair dryer hack recommended by Matthew could help tackle this, and you don't need the skills of a heating engineer to give it a try.

Step one

Matthew says you should first switch off your radiators, laying a towel beneath them so as to collect any dirt and dust that may be lurking behind

Step two

After putting your hair dryer on the highest setting, you should point the nozzle into the gap between the back of the radiator and the wall behind, blowing any trapped dust and dirt onto the towel and preventing any build-up up in the convector fins.
